...The effect of all this has made it difficult to place Hatofsky's painting in any secure relation to the artistic currents of his time. At times he has been assigned to the Bay Area group of Abstract Expressionists, and not without reason. Yet the figurative elements in his painting place him outside the interests that at times have given that group its artistic identity. In his drawings - powerful drawings of female nudes, for the most part--he may even be thought to have more in common with the Bay Area figurative painters. But his art differs from theirs as well, being at once more expressionistic and less involved with the outdoor light of the California landscape...
